Zig & Sharko is a French animatedslapstick comedytelevision series created and directed by Olivier Jean-Marie and produced by Xilam Animation. It chronicles the conflict between Zig, a brown hyena, and Sharko, a great white shark, who live on a volcanic island. The conflict is fueled by Zig's constant attempts to eat the mermaid Marina, whom Sharko loves. The series employs silent comedy: characters either do not speak, or use unintelligible vocalizations, gestures, and occasional pictograms in speech balloons. (The Indian version dubs Hindi dialogue over the animation.) Two seasons with a total of 52 half-hour episodes (156 seven-minute segments) were originally broadcast from December 21, 2010 on Canal+. The series is available for streaming in the United States on Netflix (season 1 until September 2017, season 2 currently).[1]

Characters[edit]
Major characters in the series (from left to right): Zig, Marina, Bernie, and Sharko
The series takes place on a volcanic island and revolves around an eternal war between Zig, a brown hyena, and Sharko, a great white shark. The cause of the war is Marina, a mermaid with red hair; Sharko is in love with Marina, while Zig wants only to eat her. Zig spends most of his time trying to capture and eat Marina, and is frequently seen tricking her into lying down on a giant submarine sandwich roll prepared with veggies and condiments. He concocts more elaborate schemes reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote, but like the coyote's, these are always foiled by Sharko, bad luck, or both, and often result in his grievous bodily injury. Zig is a native of Africa and arrived at the island as a baby in a shipwreck or plane wreck.
Sharko devotes himself to being Marina's bodyguard, despises Zig, and generally pummels him every chance he gets (even when he is not an imminent threat to Marina). Sharko is intensely loyal to Marina and puts himself at her beck and call. Muscular and athletic, he likes to play table tennis and watch it on television. He is the beach's lifeguard.
Marina is good-natured but quite naïve, maintaining a good relationship with most everyone on the island including Zig; she is apparently oblivious to Zig's intention to eat her. She tends to take Sharko for granted, and frequently calls him on her smartphone. She wears a small sea star as a decoration in her hair. Her fish tail does not turn into legs on dry land, but she is able to walk without difficulty using her flippers as feet. In season 1 she is often seen sitting on a rock in the lagoon, but lives in a house on the seafloor, which she shares with Sharko. In season 2, she moves into an ornate, life-sized sandcastle evocative of the Taj Mahal, built for her by Sharko. She enjoys singing, which Sharko dislikes but is popular with the locals and has a siren effect on ships. A season 1 episode presents a dream sequence in which Marina's parents are a mermaid mother and a human sailor father, but this is contradicted by the presentation of Poseidon as her father in season 2.
Zig's best friend is Bernie, a hermit crab who often collaborates in Zig's schemes to capture Marina. Despite this, Bernie doesn't seem to hold any particular grudge against Marina or Sharko, and indeed even saves Marina on several occasions when she is threatened by someone other than Zig. Zig and Bernie were adopted as babies and raised by a female gorilla. When Bernie decides to make an action film based on the four characters' lives, Marina understands that the script calls for her to be afraid of Zig, which she pretends to do[3] despite the fact she is not afraid of Zig in real life.[4]
Several animals live on the island, including monkeys, snakes, a gorilla, and a pair of elephant seals. These often wind up as unwitting pawns in Zig's ongoing conflict with Sharko. Various fish, octopi and other marine animals serve as minor characters throughout the series. They are often used as tools by the main characters in a manner similar to The Flintstones; for example, sawfish double as power saws.
The mythological Roman god of the sea, Neptune appears in season 1 as a vain, muscular merman who competes with Sharko as Marina's love interest. Ironically, he is one of the few characters Marina dislikes. He causes much trouble for Zig, Bernie and Sharko, assisted by numerous killer whale henchmen. He is replaced in season 2 with the Greek god Poseidon, who is revealed to be Marina's father. The Greek god Hades is found living inside the volcano in Season 2, and competes with Sharko for Marina's affections.
Occasionally, castaway characters appear on the island, such as a nearsighted sea captain, who in a running gag repeatedly beaches his cargo ship. In season 2, an amnesiaccargo plane pilot crashes on the island. Zig and Bernie live with him in the plane wreckage, which hangs in a tree.
Setting[edit]
The characters live on a volcanic island, such as is found in the Southern Pacific Ocean. The very large central volcanic cone occupies most of the island, and is surrounded by jungle and a narrow beach. The volcano is active, and is the home of the Greek god Hades. In season 1 episode 'Zig Airlines', the island is shown on a map to be located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar.

Development[edit]
In 2008, the television group Canal+ decided to develop pilot episodes for nine out of 135 animation projects received, including Zig and Sharko, for television broadcast during the 2010-2011 season. A development budget of 6 to 6.5 million euros (7.08 to 7.67 million US dollars) was allocated to the series. The original title was The Mermaid, the Hyena and the Shark, and it is a co-production between the television channels TF1 and Canal+ Family which broadcast later this series. The type of animation is similar to the American series of Tex Avery, Tom and Jerry, and Oggy and the Cockroaches, the latter also produced by Marc du Pontavice.
The development of the series was carried out by the French studios Xilam known for other successful series such as Space Goofs and Oggy and the Cockroaches. The series was launched on Canal+ Family on February 12, 2011 on Cartoon+ every Saturday at 7:40 pm. Xilam then produced a second season in 2013.
